In a quirky employment opportunity, the Wuzhishan Scenic Area in China’s Hebei province is on the hunt for someone to embody the legendary Monkey King from Chinese folklore, CNN reported Saturday.

The role offers a monthly salary of $842 and the unique task of hanging out in a cave at the base of a mountain while interacting with tourists and accepting plenty of bananas.

The Monkey King, Sun Wukong, is a beloved character in Chinese culture, comparable to the popularity of Grimm’s Fairy Tales in the West.

Known for his supernatural powers, martial arts prowess, and mischievous adventures, the Monkey King has captivated generations through stories, movies, and television adaptations.

The chosen candidate, adorned in a monkey mask and costume, will reside in the cave at Wuzhishan, known as “five fingers mountain,” reenacting the Monkey King’s initial entrapment by angry gods.

While the real Monkey King embarked on epic journeys, this modern-day portrayal requires a bit less movement.

The job description, as shared on social media, highlights the delightful duty of accepting snacks from visiting children, ranging from apples to instant noodles and, of course, an abundance of bananas.

With no academic requirements, the primary qualifications include a passion for Sun Wukong, acting talent, and an affable, lively demeanour for engaging with tourists.

The position has already attracted interest, with two actors already hired, leaving just one vacancy. The manager assures potential applicants that excessive banana consumption is not mandatory, as the current actors often share their snacks with colleagues after their shifts.

Addressing concerns about chilly cave conditions, the company has thoughtfully installed an electric heater.

One actor, expressing his childhood love for the character, hopes to pass on the joy and memories while promoting Chinese culture and drawing attention to the mental health of children and teenagers.

This whimsical job opportunity offers a delightful blend of cultural immersion, interactive engagement, and a buffet of free bananas, making it a unique and enticing role for those eager to step into the shoes – or rather, the mask – of the legendary Monkey King.
