A video captured by a weather camera which was obtained by Japan’s public broadcaster NHK showed the moment a 7.6-magnitude earthquake hit central Japan on Monday.

The massive quake triggered a tsunami warning and advisories for residents to evacuate and prepare for possible aftershocks, Reuters reported.

The footage showed the weather camera shaking violently as soon as the powerful tremor hit at approximately 4:06pm local time (0706 GMT).

Moreover, other videos shared online also showed strong tremors being felt across the Ishikawa prefecture.

A tsunami around a metre high struck parts of the west coast along the Sea of Japan, with a larger wave expected, according to NHK.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued tsunami warnings for the coastal prefectures of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama.

More than 36,000 households lost power in Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures, utilities provider Hokuriku Electric Power said.

The quake, which struck on New Year’s Day, was felt in Tokyo and across the Kanto area.

Additionally, South Korea’s Gangwon province warned residents to take precautions and evacuate to higher grounds after Monday’s earthquake in Japan.

Earlier, South Korea’s meteorological agency warned of a potential rise in the sea level in some parts of the Gangwon province on the east coast.
