MUMBAI: The year 2023 saw the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA)-Mumbai once again handle over thousand flights in 24 hours on certain days. The last time the Mumbai airport handled over thousand flights per day was in the year 2018. This year though the airport broke its previous record.
The highest passenger traffic movement in a single day was observed on November 25 with 167,132 passengers travelling through CSMIA (with more than 1,20,000 domestic pax movements and more than 46,000 international pax movements). The airport achieved a highest single-day record of 1,032 air traffic movements on November 11, 2023, surpassing the previous record set in 2018.
The year 2023 began with the major re-carpeting project for Runway 14/32, the airport ‘s secondary runway. The re-carpeting enhanced operational efficiency overall, said Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL). It added that the introduction of -‘Taxiway Z’ – reduced entry and exit times for aircraft and substantially lowering carbon emissions. “The launch of Taxiway Z positioned CSMIA as the first in the Asian region to offer a flexible-use apron,” MIAL said.
Another significant development was the commissioning of a specialized Disabled Aircraft Recovery Kit (Dark). While the airport in Delhi and Bengaluru already commissioned this kit before Mumbai did, the CSMIA airport was the first airport in Asia to possess this facility with “High-Pressure lifting bags.” “Dark ensures a superior and efficient recovery process for even the largest commercial aircraft,” said the airport spokesperson.
Early this year, CSMIA announced its summer schedule with 14% more weekly flight movements as compared to the summer schedule of 2022.Similarly, in the Winter Schedule for 2023-2024 – the airport has been handling over 950 daily flight movements, representing an 8% increase compared to the previous year, said MIAL. The airport connects passengers to 115 destinations.
When it comes to facilities inside terminal buildings, CSMIA installed 2D Barcode readers at the entry gates of Terminals 1 and 2, said MIAL. It added that this streamlined entry procedures to ensure a hassle-free travel experience. “The airport also introduced an advanced Parking Guidance System at Terminal 2. This system combines state-of-the-art technology with design, ensuring travellers experience seamless and stress-free parking,” it added.
The Mumbai airport has set a goal to be net-zero by 2029. “The airport’s commitment to becoming one of the first to eliminate Single-Use Plastic earned it the title of the ‘Best Sustainable Airport of the Year’ by ASSOCHAM,” said MIAL. Then there was the introduction of Uber Green, the flagship electric vehicle service by Uber. “The Platinum Rating in the Green Airports Recognition (GAR) Programme 2023 by the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific further highlights CSMIA’s commitment to sustainability. The airport is the first in India, the third globally, and the second in the Asia-Pacific region to receive this recognition,” MIAL added.
