Officials of University, were informed about firing early in morning, said Colorado Springs Police Department
Authorities in Colorado said that officials found two dead bodies with gunshot wounds in a dorm room at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, without revealing details about the victims terming it a homicide.
Police said that the incident did not appear to be a murder-suicide and both deaths were being investigated as homicides.
Officials said Friday evening that they were continuing to develop and follow investigative leads and would provide additional information when it becomes available.
Officials of the University Friday, were informed about the firing early in the morning, said the Colorado Springs Police Department.
In a post on X — formerly called Twitter — Colorado Springs Police Department said they “don’t believe there is an ongoing threat to the community.”
Police also said in the post: “This incident does not appear to be a murder-suicide and both deaths are being investigated as homicides.”
“We are continuing to develop and follow investigative leads and will provide additional information when it becomes available,” police added.
University spokesperson said that the campus lockdown — that was imposed after the incident — was lifted, however, classes were closed for the rest of the day.
While expressing grief, University Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet told journalists in a press conference: “We are in shock as we process this tragic loss of two lives. My heart is broken for the victims of today’s senseless violence.”
Police said in a statement: “While the coroner will make the official determination of cause and manner of death, these deaths are being investigated as a homicide. We are in the very early stages of piecing together what happened. We are working diligently and looking at every possibility.”
Authorities did not reveal the identities of the victims.
“I am closely monitoring the situation at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs campus and have spoken with our Department of Public Safety, and CU President Todd Saliman to offer state support where needed,” said Governor Jared Polis in a statement.
